My father was diagnosed with Parkinson's in his late 70s. It started with tremors. He was put on Syndopa medicine.
Over time, things got harder. He fell twice and blacked out. He had no memory of what happened. The medicines were adjusted — increased, decreased then increased. He still had tremors and stiffness.
Eventually, he became fully dependent. He needed help eating, dressing, and bathing. He stopped going for walks.
My mother, who is also elderly, had been his primary caretaker. It had been a long and difficult journey for her too.
Side effects of higher dosage of Syndopa began showing up. At times, he developed uncontrolled shaking (dyskinesia). If his medicine was slightly delayed, the tremors returned. Slowly, the medicine stopped working as well as before.
Consultation, Getting to Know DBS and making the decision

We met with Dr. Guruprasad Hosurkar and
Dr. Raghuram Gopalakrishnan at KIMS Hospital in Mahadevapura to understand progression and our options.
They recommended DBS surgery. He was 85. Surgery on the brain at that age, it was a big decision.
We had many concerns and questions. Both Dr. Guruprasad and Dr. Raghuram patiently answered all our questions and gave us confidence. My father himself wanted to go ahead. The goal was simple: a better quality of life.
From our end, we took time to learn about DBS, discussed it as a family and then made the decision to proceed with DBS. For us it came down to this. The benefits of DBS outweighed the concerns when we compared lifestyle without DBS as Parkinson's progressed and lifestyle with DBS.
DBS and Where We Are Now

My father got DBS surgery done at KIMS Hospital Mahadevapura. Highly skilled and professional team of Dr. Raghuram, Dr. Guruprasad and KIMS hospital staff did an excellent job. My father was in the hospital for 5 days.
The results after DBS have been remarkable. My father now puts on his own shoes. He walks for 30 minutes inside the apartment. He eats by himself. He bathes with only a little help. The dyskinesia is completely gone. His medicines have gradually reduced. His confidence has grown enormously. He is reading comedy drama books — and enjoying every page.
He does still face some difficulty with short turns while walking. Team has given him ways to manage this.
